One to watch: Design at the Walker art center

Curator Andrew Blaufeldt talks about the history of deisgn at the Walker art center, an institution for architecture and design from all around the world. It really is one to watch especially for us europeans, who don't know so much about the impact the Walker art center actually has on design today, handling up and coming designers with in-house design, much alike the Tate "graphic school" that is running in London.

I remember seeing the first "Diary of Kanye West" on MTV a few years back. They visited his mother in his old childhood home and it turns out that Kanye West was actually an fine art student in college. His mother, who has now sadly passed away, showed paintings that looked like landscapes of psychedelic colours. The compositions were explained by Kanye as beats. He pointed out the snares and the claps and the bass drums and it just made sense to me, how some musical geniuses can see music. Mr. West gets a lot of bad rep because of his "ignorance" or lack of interview skills, but he is in my opinion one of the artists and producers who actually made hip hop something that anyone can relate to, its about life, not just being a gangsta. This is actually one of the first graffiti artists that truly inspires me. I like his concept, his compositions and his simplicity. This is a positive essense that graff really brings, making things simple and clean. Excess is in Kaws case non existing. Just like Poster boy, I also find the adbusting factor sustainable and I would love to do a outdoor advertising concept based on the interaction of a series of street artists evolving and re-interpretating the original message, constantly changing the output.

I especially like the girl in the first film saying that she wish that she could wake up in a place where all wardrobes are portals to each other and that you could wake up, walk into your wardrobe and have breakfast with a stranger or someone you already know. Wonderful. I have to do something with that vision, it sounds magical. Another strong notice is the guy who reveals his cancer publicly in a very casual way, I felt that one very deeply.

Oasis vs BBH - Dig out your soul in the streets

Swedish advertisings brotherly creative team working at BBH have now put out an interesting approach to a record launch. Busking is not new, but leaking new songs from Oasis to these buskers, letting them play them in the streets of New York is quite cool I think. I question how people are supposed to know it is Oasis songs. I like the subtle approach though, letting the song and music speak first and then tie it all together when the actual album is released. Hopefully the word-of-mouth (music) is enough to give it an extra push in the stores. Credible to me!

In the same go as they are presenting the Whitecanvas Beta, they also made a series of artist films which are quite nice. Again talking about different creative mediums like photography, film and art, it just seems that I can never get tired of understanding the process of work from other creatives. It sucks me right in. There is a great one on Toben Seymour creating a puppet of Kanye west, another one about famous-but-new-to-me artist Ed Moses (great abstract use of paint) as well as a great little story about man named Mori Onodera who likes fish, but rice even more.

Beautiful people + Nike

Have a look at this! In the momentum of the release of the documentary Beautiful People, which is about creative people scratching the surface of what they really are to the society around them, Nike has started a program encouraging youngsters to go out and learn about self-expression. A series of workshops shows kids trying sneaker design and skateboard graphics. many famous designers and artists from the movie participate in this program and the result is somewhat bittersweet. It seems great but the scale is not very encouraging from a brand like Nike, if you think about what Jamie Oliver did for British school food...and I wish I could see more emotion and stronger expressions. It did not really move me the way I wish it would have. But as I said, it is still pretty sweet!

Objectified - the movie

So the somewhat sequel to the Helvetica movie is soon out, and this time it is all about design, how we percieve design, what is good design and so on. I believe Helvetica was a little bit of a trial and error movie as it was incredibly niched even though the typeface is not. This time around I really believe it will work properly for the masses. Considering most of us spending hours in Ikea looking for future classics without even considering it, setting higher and higher consumer standards to cellphones and other electronic appliances, I think we are all in the search of the ultimate design for almost everything. As long as it is cheap, durable and looks really good, we are happy. Sounds easy doesn't it, well here is the trailer and wait for the movie to see how easy design really is...

I prefer the one with Alex Courtes as I spent a few years as a filter disco/french house dj and I was surprised to see that half his designs are actually in my living room shelf unintentionally. The Chanel Podcasts

I have been watching these podcasts for little over a year now and even though they are not directly related back to the notion of talking about and around design and concepts, I must say that Karl Lagerfeld has created an incredible vision together with his team the recent years, and the fashion shows in Paris are the most terrific ones I have ever seen. Excellent location, stage design and music collaborations create an excentric and young mix for this old-school brand that pushes them forward and always makes that black and white look like the future. Somehow the podcasts always feature one of my favourite songs of the moment and that is a small thing that really amazes me. Also watch out for border-crossing projects like the Zaha Hadid travelling Chanel exhibition and funny little things like the Karl Lagerfeld Teddybear, all found in the Chanel News section here.

I love testimonials, just a white background and a colourful personality willing and able to share some thoughts about life and the things that surrounds us. This is a nice little campaign by NYTimes.com allowing some more or less famous people talk about how they use the NYTimes website to stay updated about what is going on in the world. Have a look! There is a YouTube channel and a campaign site at nytimes.com/conversations.

I like this one, and the one with Padma Lakshmi because she is stunning and so sophisticated. A dream woman.

I don’t believe in playing around much with suit cuts. I like a fairly classic shape that gives a man strong shoulders, a fitted waist, and long legs. Classic simplicity always works.

2.
Someone who is secure enough to be very present when relating to another person is sexy. In other words, a good listener always lands who he wants.

3.
When mixing patterns, don’t think about it too much—just throw it together.

4.
I hate the trend of short suit jackets. When a man’s butt is showing below the bottom of his jacket, I think it makes him look like a female flight attendant from the back—not my idea of sexy.

With jewelry, I actually like bracelets more than anything else, but they have to be small and simple. Cary Grant always wore a simple gold bracelet with his watch, and I think that was very chic.

If you’re careful not to overuse Botox, then yes, why shouldn’t you use it? A little bit of it between the brows can make you look less stern and more approachable. Who needs to frown, anyway?

Just like girls need to learn to be comfortable in heels before they go out in them for the first time, a man should try wearing a suit throughout a normal day. I do most things in a suit—and sometimes even in a tuxedo—and so I’m really comfortable in one.

When it comes to grooming, keep earwax out of the ears and keep stray hairs and flakes of skin in check and you should be good to go. In the morning, I put ice cubes on my eyes and use lots of Visine.

Time and silence are the most luxurious things today.

There’s one indulgence every man should try in his lifetime: If you’re straight, sleep with a man at least once, and if you’re gay, don’t go through life without sleeping with a woman. Either way, you might be surprised at how natural it will feel if you can get past the mind-fuck of stereotypes. In the end, it’s just another person that you are relating to in a physical way.

Arbitrary yet brillant. I think this is the kind of simple creativity that really should have a stronger force. Bring it out of its environment, and I am not sure it would work that well, but I could imagine piles of IKEA bags wondering around the city, sleeping on corners, having lunch in diners, great awareness!
